Doctor Strange is the palate cleanser Marvel needed

Doctor Strange

Title: Doctor Strange
Marvel Studios
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton
Release Date: November 4th, 2016
Review By: Jeffrey Schimmer

“You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole. You’ve spent your life trying to widen it.” The Ancient One tells a desperate Dr. Strange. As a fan of the superhero film, it has sometimes felt like that for the genre. They can get formulaic, predictable and at worst boring. Dr. Strange may not shed the first two charges, but it certainly escapes the latter. The cinematography and visual effects adds a fresh element to recharge the MCU.

Doctor Stephen Strange is one of the top neurosurgeons in the world. The best according him. All the awards in his living room trophy case would support his argument. It all comes crashing down when he crashes his Lamborghini off a cliff. Surgery on his hands could not prevent permanent nerve damage. When all medical options fails, Strange resorts to more mystical methods of treatment. This journey leads him to Kamar-Taj and The Ancient One.

Many of Marvel’s cornerstones are present. A tight script leads to a tightly edited film. There are few excess shots and no scene is wasted. A closeup of an apple foreshadows its use later in the scene. The humor is also dished out to counter the notes that are redundant to superhero origin stories. When Strange first meets the Ancient One, the scene is humorous instead of somber. This is helped by the flawless casting choices. Benedict Cumberbatch is the Doctor Strange we deserve. Chiwetel Ejiofor brings depth to Mordo. Mads Mikkelsen, one of the premier antagonist character actors, gives us an imposing Kaecilius. And while you may have reservations about Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One (The Ancient One is an Asian man in the comics), she has always had an ethereal aura perfect for this role.

The character traits of Stephen Strange align with Tony Stark. Both are egocentric, with their arrogance causing them great physical harm. This harm leads to self-discovery and the ability to save lives. Doctor Strange is able to deviate enough. We get introduced to a mentor figure that isn’t part of the Iron Man storyline. It’s this dynamic that the film begins to flourish. The world building has the excitement of Hogwarts, with infinite possibilities. Real-life mysticism is incorporated and adds a fun layer. Things like the mind being more powerful than the body play a philosophical and practical role in the film.

One of the infinite possibilities is to warp space, creating stunning visuals reminiscent of Inception. Even if you are not a fan of superhero movies, this film is worth going to for these scenes alone. It is one of the more unique and stunning visuals I have seen in a long time. Better than Inception, better than Interstellar, on par with Avatar in terms of 3D. Seeing a hallway expand beyond the normal limits of physics or a city fold in on itself, becoming floating blocks of brick and steel was just fantastic. (However, those who get motion sickness should avoid 3D.)

Final Thoughts: Doctor Strange takes its rightful place in the pantheon of superhero films. It may not have the most original story, but it’s a serious testament to visual storytelling.

Astro A50 Headphone Review Plus Interview

  • November 11, 2016November 16, 2016
  • by raygnagey

Jeffrey Schimmer (aka Excited Jeff) talked to James Lang, and engineer at Astro who worked on the A50 headphones. The Astro A50 is typically used by professional gamers and enthusiasts alike. Later, Jeff tested a pair on his own. His thoughts are below.

In the age of buying things online it’s hard to know what’s true quality and what’s not.

So holding a product in your hands is a true test of its quality. When you hold the Astro A50 headphones, you instantly understand why they are used by gaming pros. They feel light but solid. They are very comfortable on your head, which is great because with 15 hours of battery life per charge, you can binge on that new game. (Something I’m very guilty of.) Even the design of the mod system, using magnets to hold the pads, shows they pay attention to every detail.

The sound is incredible, with Dolby 7.1 surround sound. When you hook up the headphones to your console, you hear everything. When I played Battlefield 1 it became a truly visceral experience.

There are just two drawbacks. The first is setting up the base station to your computer. They are ready to go outside the box, but I had some trouble setting it up for my PC. The other one is price. At $300 they can cost around the same a new system. It depends on what you value in a game. Sound can really give you that complete experience. Hearing every kick of the ball, explosion of a grenade, revving of an engine is so satisfying. If you don’t have a surround sound system hooked up to your TV, this provides a great solution. Not to mention listening to a movie or music. There’s even an aux cable to connect your phone to the base station.

They come highly recommended from me, wallet willing.

Wonder Woman Trailer Released

Gal Gadot Kicks Ass in new “Wonder Woman” Trailer

It’s fair to say that when Gal Gadot was announced as the new Wonder Woman, she and DC received their fair share of skeptics. However, her cameo in Batman v Superman was one of the few bright spots in the movie (along with a pretty solid Batman from Ben Affleck).

Warner Brothers released the second trailer for Wonder Woman recently, and if it’s anything to go by, DC may have a hit on their hands. Gadot showcases some serious “bad-assery” in the trailer. That, coupled with a beautifully intense soundtrack, really contribute to what is a solid trailer. The movie will be set much before present day DCEU and will provide the backstory to Diana Prince. Including love interest Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine.

Let us know what you think of the second trailer!

Escape: ‘Timeless’ and ‘Blacklist’

Enter Escape Entertainment

img_2310

Blacklist and Timeless. Two of the more fanciful shows on network television. Which lends them to some fun opportunities beyond the screen. Enter Escape Entertainment. If you’re unfamiliar with Escape, it’s like a haunted house for adults. At least that’s how Antwand puts it. I’m not messing with any haunted houses myself this year, so I call it the haunted house for the thinking man.

Just east of Madison Square Park, on 25th and Madison Ave, resides the Sony Square NYC. When you walk in, you are presented with two new installations by Escape Entertainment. Teaming up with Sony and NBC, they have built a life-size replica of Red’s holding cell from NBC’s Blacklist. To its right is a replica of the “Lifeboat” from NBC’s new series Timeless. They may be cleverly masked as promotional material, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have entertainment value. So, are they worth it?

Well, both feature three puzzles with a 10 minute shot clock. Each of the games follow a logical pattern, which are demanding but not frustrating. I managed to complete both games with just a tiny bit of help from the staff that I totally didn’t need. Totally…

Regardless, both are fun and coyly (or not so coyly) feature other Sony products, like their new Portable Projectors, which I have to admit are pretty nifty. All in all, it’s a good experience if you find yourself in the neighborhood, or have a cousin visiting who doesn’t like museums.

The installations will be up through December 2nd, with advanced signups available on sony.com/squarenyc. You can also try PSVR and look at Sony’s other gear at Sony Square NYC.

Doctor Strange set to be the latest MCU Blockbuster

  • October 21, 2016November 22, 2016
  • by raygnagey

Doctor Strange to hit the big screens in November

With Doctor Strange being released in US theaters in about two weeks, the Sorcerer Supreme will become the latest superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Benedict Cumberbatch adds on to the already impressive list of Hollywood stars that star in the MCU. Based on what’s shown in the trailer itself, it looks like this movie will not only compete with the special effects of Inception, but perhaps even blow it out of the water.

Doctor Strange is out in theaters on Nov. 4, and is the second and final MCU movie this year. Don’t worry though, 2017 holds plenty for all the comic books fans, Marvel and DC alike. The teasers for the likes of Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have all come out in the last week or so. Marvel has been on a tear as of late. From Netflix to the big screen the company is not letting up. If you are one the fans of Doctor Strange let us know in the comment section below.

Half Sisters – Female Bonding

Half Sisters Female Bonding Episode 06 – Vanessa is torn up over yesterday’s fight with her sisters. Her plan – and special guest – are a bit misguided and scantily clad.

About Half Sisters

Half Sisters is a ridiculous comedy about three women who discover they are sisters at their father’s funeral upon co-inheriting his event planning business. Now forced to work together and run a host of kooky parties with even crazier clients, these seemingly incompatible sisters must juggle baby showers gone wrong, drunk wedding officiants, and even a rapping rabbi in order to keep their business afloat. You think your family is made up of a bunch of characters? Just wait ’till you meet the Stones…
